Pangandaran / Java

Posted in Landscapes, Latest of Asienreisender with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 5, 2015 by Thim Kwai

Pangandaran is a town at the south coast of Java. It’s the most popular tourist destination for the Javanese, so it’s pretty touristic and in times of holidays very crowded. Nevertheless it’s still a destination worth to spend a few days here. Particularly Pananjung Pangandaran Nature Reserve, a nature park situated on a peninsula behind the town is worth to be visited. It’s one of the last few patches of tropical rainforest who are left on the heavily overpopulated island of Java.

Mount (Gunung) Bromo and the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru Massive / Java

Posted in Landscapes, Latest of Asienreisender with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 28, 2015 by Thim Kwai

The mountain scenery of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru Massive is among Java’s most picturesque landscapes, and that means much, because Java is rich in fantastic landscapes. What is now the ‘sea of sand’ around Gunung Bromo was a long time ago in earth history the caldera of the Tengger supervolcano. After it’s collapse some new, smaller volcanoes appeared and shaped the landscape as it looks now. One of them is famous Mount (Gunung) Bromo.

Posted in Landscapes, Latest of Asienreisender with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on January 24, 2015 by Thim Kwai

Climbing Mount Merapi is possible, with or without guide. Since it’s not easy to get a good guide here, going by oneself is an option. One has to be somewhat careful then, though, and to consider some things before starting. The reward of the climb is the view deep down into the crater of one of the most active and dangerous volcanos on earth.

The Dieng Plateau is one of Java’s great landscapes in two ways: first it’s an archeological landscape which was home for a medieval temple city, representing the oldest remaining Javanese stone buildings; second Dieng Plateau is the result of the outbreak of a huge, ancient volcano some 16,000 years ago, which left the high plain with about 100 new craters, volcanic mountain lakes and some other volcanoes around.

Berastagi / Sumatra / Indonesia

Posted in Landscapes, Latest of Asienreisender with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 2, 2014 by Thim Kwai

Berastagi in the Batak Karo Highlands of north Sumatra was once a Dutch hill station for the reason of it’s cool climate in an altitude of around 1,300m. Berastagi town itself is not an attractive place to go, but the surroundings are splendid. In the direct neighbourhood are two volcanoes, Mount (Gunung) Sibayak and Gunung Sinabung. Climbing Sibayak is relatively easy, but one has to be aware of the dangers here: there are long lists of people who got lost here while hiking. Some 12km away from Berastagi lies Gunung Sinabung, a volcano who has an ongoing series of outbreaks since 2010. When travelling from Medan to Lake Toba, it’s defenitely worth to make the detour via Berastagi.

Bukit Lawang is a place for jungle trekking as well, with or without guides. Nearby majestic bat cave, already in the jungle, can easily be visited without a guide. Lake Toba

Posted in Landscapes, Latest of Asienreisender with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 5, 2014 by Thim Kwai

Magnificent Lake Toba and it’s landscapes are one of the very natural treasures of Southeast Asia. It’s as phantastic as many fantasy landscapes in computer games with great graphics and similar to legendary landscapes shown in movies like ‘Noah’ (2014) or the American serial ‘Lost’. Also the local people of the Batak tribe are unique and are still living a half-way traditional life. Lake Toba’s surroundings are magnificent and rural, and therefore a great destination for hikers.
